Your first salsa class cheat sheet
- Different people learn at a different pace and that’s OK!
Instructors will work at your pace to make sure you get the help you need. The beginner classes will be truly for beginners. Don’t worry if someone seems to pick moves up quicker than you. You will all get there in the end.
Ageing fitness expert Verona Chadwick says people overlook salsa as a way for seniors to stay healthy. She explains that “many people think of salsa as a high paced, young person’s activity. This couldn’t be further from the truth. Salsa can provide seniors with a way to stay active, to get the blood pumping, and even to socialise which can combat isolation and anxiety in older Australians.”
- Your instructor will help you as you go
Your instructor will be professional and encouraging so that you should feel good after the class. Beginner instructors will have incredible patience, empathy, and kindness. They remember what it’s like to be new to dancing. The right instructor will balance professionalism with friendliness.
The instructor may take turns dancing with the students, especially when the class doesn’t have an even number of students. That way the student will feel and see how it’s to dance with an expert Salsero.
- Your studio will be clean and safe
A clean and safe environment is essential when you are attending classes for the first time. The studio will be accessible, clean, and hygienic. The Salsa studio is soon going to be like your second home.
- Your classmates will support and respect you
The class will have respectful classmates. It’s everyone’s right to feel comfortable in the Salsa Class. Don’t stress if you don’t feel like the most competent dancer. Your classmates will help out if needed, but there’ll be no judgement as you learn at your own pace.
- You’ll get a workout!
Salsa is a serious workout because it demands both cardio conditioning and great strength. You will be using your muscles and balancing techniques that you may have already forgotten about. According to expert osteopaths, “Salsa is a whole body workout that burns calories and is great for boosting the metabolism. With extra social benefits – you’ll make new friends with every class – there is so much for the body to take on and enjoy.”
